The Evidence Behind Every Clean Audit

Five case studies, four countries, one recurring result: donor portfolios that closed audit-clean under real operating pressure.

Case Study: Reallocating a Grant Overrun to Protect 100% Allowable Cost Compliance

Upon assuming the Director of Finance and Operations role for the Somalia Mission, I conducted a comprehensive review of all active donor portfolios and identified a budget anomaly on a flagship grant nearing its award end date, where cumulative commitments and posted expenditure had exceeded the authorised ceiling. A forensic audit of the general ledger confirmed an active portfolio-wide overrun requiring immediate intervention to protect donor compliance. I directed a granular transaction audit, reallocated allowable costs to concurrent grants with available capacity, and secured HQ sign-off before posting any adjustment. The grant closed on schedule with 100% allowable cost compliance and zero financial disallowances.

Case Study: Building a Mission-Wide Aid Diversion Framework Across Eight Functions

In response to sector-wide scrutiny of aid diversion and asset leakage in 2022, I recognised that International Medical Corps operated under general risk guidelines without a formalised Aid Diversion policy suited to volatile field operations. I spearheaded the design and mission-wide deployment of an Aid Diversion and Fraud Mitigation Policy framework, mobilising eight technical and operational functions to map vulnerability vectors in their own workflows. The consolidated SOP embedded multi-tier verification checkpoints across procurement, vendor due diligence, cash disbursement and recruitment. HQ Global Grants and Compliance validated the framework before its formal submission to donor agencies.

Case Study: Catalysing Somalia's First Direct Bank-to-EVC Mobile Payment Integration

As International Medical Corps scaled its programme footprint in 2023, legacy cash-handling and manual payment workflows became a bottleneck slowing disbursements to field activities, vendors and programmes. Building on mobile payment integration that had already lifted Kenya's payment processing efficiency by 37%, I engaged corporate banking partners in Somalia to assess digital banking capability and electronic funds transfer frameworks. That advocacy catalysed banking partners to develop and deploy a first-of-its-kind direct corporate bank-to-EVC mobile payment integration. Institutional accounts were linked directly to the EVC mobile money system for instant, secure and traceable disbursement.

Bonus Case Study (CV-Sourced): Establishing Zero-to-Operational Banking Infrastructure in Crisis-Affected Bukavu

Deployed as Finance Manager to Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I entered a volatile, high-risk operating environment with no established financial infrastructure. I built mission-critical banking and operational accounts from the ground up to guarantee uninterrupted programme funding. Alongside this, I delivered comprehensive ACCPAC platform training to national finance personnel to sustain the system after my deployment ended. The mission maintained uninterrupted operational liquidity throughout a genuinely difficult operating period.

Bonus Case Study (CV-Sourced): Raising Kenya Donor Credibility and Budget Approval Rates by 42%

As a Senior Management Team representative for the Kenya mission's five-year strategy, I owned the financial planning process underpinning every strategic decision. I introduced a comprehensive grant tracker to give leadership real-time portfolio visibility across the mission's field offices. This work raised donor credibility and budget approval rates by 42% through demonstrably superior compliance standards, and lifted cross-team decision-making speed by 28% on multi-million-dollar funding streams. It gave the mission a financial planning discipline that outlasted my own tenure in the role.
