One Finance Practice, Nine Disciplines Deep

From donor compliance to treasury governance, this is the full breadth of expertise behind every clean audit I have delivered.

Nine Disciplines

The Full Depth Behind Each Competency

Compliance & Risk Governance

Safeguarding Portfolio in High-Risk Environments

I safeguard donor portfolios in operating environments where volatility is the norm, not the exception. When I identified a budget overrun on a flagship Somalia grant nearing its award end date, I led a forensic audit of the general ledger, reconciled month-to-date transaction journals, and cross-examined open commitments with logistics and procurement before HQ finance directors and the global grants compliance department signed off on the fix. The reallocation absorbed the full cost variance while holding 100% allowable cost compliance, protecting the mission's revenue from unrecoverable deficits. Protecting a portfolio under pressure means catching the problem before an auditor does.

Enterprise Risk Management & Aid Diversion Mitigation

I build institutional risk protocols before a gap becomes a finding, not after. Across the Somalia mission I formulated and deployed enterprise risk management protocols for regional sub-grantees, embedding governance and transparency standards throughout the procurement cycle, and paired them with monthly budget-versus-actual analyses that surfaced variances while they were still correctable. That combination of preventive controls and closer monitoring cut audit query rates by 41% during stringent external audits. Risk management only earns its name when it changes what auditors find, not just how the findings get explained afterward.

Statutory Reporting & Audit Readiness

Audit readiness is not a fire drill run before the auditors arrive, it is a discipline kept running every month. I institutionalised expenditure monitoring frameworks and monthly budget-versus-actual analyses that flagged variances early enough to correct them before they became findings, and coordinated full-cycle financial administration for prime and sub-awardees, covering proposal budgeting, expenditure tracking and statutory filings for regulatory compliance. That discipline held through my entire tenure directing the Somalia mission's $25M annual portfolio, sustaining a 100% clean audit outcome. Statutory reporting only protects an organisation when it is treated as a daily habit rather than a year-end scramble.

Grant Lifecycle & Treasury Management

Donor Grant Lifecycle & Compliance Management

Donor compliance breaks down fastest when accountability frameworks lag behind field realities, so I built ours ahead of the curve. Recognising that International Medical Corps operated under general risk guidelines without a formalised Aid Diversion policy, I spearheaded the design and mission-wide deployment of an Aid Diversion and Fraud Mitigation framework, mobilising technical and operational leads across Health, Nutrition, WASH, Protection, Procurement, Logistics, HR and Security to map vulnerability vectors in their own workflows. The consolidated SOP embedded multi-tier verification checkpoints across procurement, vendor due diligence, cash disbursement and recruitment, and HQ Global Grants and Compliance validated the framework before formal submission to donor agencies. A grant lifecycle only stays compliant when every function protects it, not just finance.

Subaward & Sub-Grantee Compliance Monitoring

Sub-grantee risk sits outside an organisation's own systems, so I built monitoring that reaches into theirs. In Kenya I fortified sub-grantee management protocols through rigorous quarterly review visits, targeted training programmes and comprehensive spot checks, holding programmatic and financial alignment to the same standard as the prime award itself. Combined with a comprehensive grant tracker giving real-time portfolio visibility across the mission's field offices, that oversight elevated donor credibility and budget approval rates by 42%. A sub-award is only as compliant as the weakest partner in the chain, so I monitor the chain, not just the prime.

Treasury & Multi-Currency Cash Flow Management

Treasury work in a fragile-context mission means keeping cash moving across currencies and borders without ever letting liquidity become the constraint on programming. I administered financial reporting and treasury management for Somalia's hybrid, in-country and cross-border operating model, accelerating reporting turnaround times by 34% while maintaining seamless liquidity for multi-currency disbursements. In Kenya I directed comprehensive cash-flow planning and field office disbursements, cultivating strategic banking relationships that preserved operational liquidity across every mission site run entirely in-country, and integrated MPESA online payment systems that lifted payment processing efficiency by 37%. Treasury management is judged on the day a field office cannot pay its vendors, and mine has never failed that test.

Digital Transformation & Multi-Country Leadership

Digital Financial Transformation & Process Optimization

Manual, paper-heavy payment workflows are where humanitarian treasury operations most often stall, and closing that gap has defined much of my recent work. Building on mobile payment integration that had already lifted Kenya's payment processing efficiency by 37%, I engaged corporate banking partners in Somalia to assess digital banking capability and electronic funds transfer frameworks, then applied the same control protocols to a new context. That advocacy catalysed a first-of-its-kind direct corporate bank-to-EVC mobile payment integration, linking institutional accounts to the EVC mobile money system for instant, secure and traceable disbursements to field staff, vendors and beneficiaries. The right digital infrastructure turns a payment bottleneck into an operational advantage.

ERP & Financial Systems Modernisation

Financial systems only create value when the people using them are trained to trust the numbers coming out. I have directed financial operations on Deltek ERP's Costpoint module alongside IBM Cognos and IBM TM1 for reporting and analytics, and earlier in my career delivered comprehensive Sage ACCPAC platform training to national finance personnel in the Democratic Republic of Congo, building local capacity rather than importing dependency on outside specialists. I am currently extending that systems fluency into Power BI, to bring the same analytical rigour to portfolio-level dashboards. Modernising a finance system is only half the job, training a team to run it is the half that makes it stick.

Multi-Country Leadership in Fragile & Crisis Contexts

Crisis contexts do not wait for a finance system to be ready, so I have built the ones I inherited from zero more than once. In a crisis-affected region of the Democratic Republic of Congo I established mission-critical banking infrastructure and operational accounts from scratch to guarantee uninterrupted programme funding, while in South Sudan I institutionalised standardised month-end accounting procedures and delivered emergency-focused finance and procurement training that kept field personnel compliant under pressure. In both postings I maintained uninterrupted cash flow and field disbursements throughout acute crisis conditions, because a mission's finance function is one of the few things beneficiaries never see and can never afford to notice failing. Leading finance across fragile contexts means the infrastructure has to work before anyone has time to test it.
